Instructions are an essential communication component of organizations, but even advanced students seldom admit any shortcomings in direction-writing. Whether printed material for customers on how to use a product (construct the children's play set, connect a DVD player to a home entertainment center, or program a car radio's stations), formal job procedures (entering information into a database; installing a new, proprietary computer system; or detailing steps in organizing a stockholders' meeting), or informal instructions (how to find the location of a meeting in another city, guidelines for successful proposal preparation, or suggestions for preparing a sales presentation in PowerPoint), good instructions are necessary to business and an important business communication skill. Visualization plays a pivotal role in effective instructions. This article offers suggestions for teaching visual support in instructions--"how" to use it, "when" to use it, and "where" to place it--and shares examples of effective visualization.
