Although there is an extensive review of the literature about the skills/competencies and knowledge areas needed for success as an entry-level student affairs professional (Hyman, 1988; Kinser, 1993; Lovell & Kosten, 2000; Ostroth, 1981; Waple, 2006), no such study or studies have been conducted regarding how graduates of College Student Personnel (CSP) master's preparation programs learn the skills/competencies and knowledge areas necessary for success as an entry-level student affairs professional. Modifying a survey by Waple (2000) that assessed the skills and competencies necessary for entry-level student affairs work, the researcher used existing criteria to ascertain the perception of how each content area was learned, through coursework or through practical experience. This study was designed to assess how student affairs professionals who graduated from a CSP master's program think they learned the skills/competencies and knowledge areas necessary for success as an entry-level professional, through course work and/or practical experience.
