Sustained Content Teaching in Academic ESL/EFL: A Practical Approach.
Pally, Marcia, Ed.
This edited volume provides a rationale for and classroom examples of the effective use of content-based instruction in English-as-Second/English-as-a-Foreign-Language (ESL/EFL), in which the study of an academic subject is sustained over time. Each chapter provides the following: detailed course descriptions; practical suggestions for developing content-based curricula; sample units of sustained-content courses; methods and materials such as exercises, study aids, and charts for integrating skills into content areas; classroom activities and assignments; examples of challenges facing teachers and students; excerpts of student accomplishments; and assessment measures. The text provides teachers with a sense of the possible applications of sustained content-based instruction and helps them design courses that will prepare their students for future academic success. Twelve chapters are included: "Sustaining Interest/Advancing Learning: Sustained Content-Based Instruction in ESL/EFL--Theoretical Background" (Marcia Pally); "Reading and Writing for Academic Purposes" (Joan G. Carson); "The Old Man and the Sea: A Data-Driven, Corpus-Based Grammar Reading Course" (Charles S. Haynes); "Sustained Content Study and the Internet: Developing Functional and Academic Literacies" (Loretta F. Kasper); "Frames for Reference: Content-Based Instruction in the Context of Speech" (Neil R. Williams); "Critical Thinking Development and Academic Writing for Engineering Students" (Lynne Flowerdew); "Well-Formedness Principles on Syntactic Structures" (Paul J. Camhi); "Managing Information for Writing University Exams in American History" (Gayle Nelson with Jill Burns); "Film and Society: A Course for Analyzing Readings, Writing, and Critical Thinking" (Marcia Pally); "E Pluribus Unum: Health as Content for a Community of Learners" (Nathalie Bailey); "Reflecting on Commentary: Mind, Intellect, and a Use of Language" (Rudolph W. Bernard); and "Linking Assessment to the Content-Based Curriculum" (Leila May-Landy). References and appendices are located at end of selected chapters. (KFT)
