Being PREPaREd for Crisis in Northern Colorado
Hancock, Kathy; Malvey, Michelle; Rastatter, Dennis
Communique, v38 n7 p7-8 May 2010
The Thompson School District recognized after the Columbine incident in the spring of 1999 that it was lacking an adequate plan for crisis response. Colorado legislation led to a mandate for having a crisis response plan so the district purchased a "canned" crisis response plan that served the needs of response in a very immediate but impersonal way. In the fall of 2006, the district recognized that it was time to address crisis preparedness in a more thorough way. That fall, the district incident response team was created. The team receive the PREPaRE training and the accompanying training of trainers workshop. In this article, the authors offer descriptions of how various elements of the PREPaRE curriculum are being implemented in different school systems. They illustrate how the fourth element of the curriculum (Provide and Respond crisis interventions) is currently being addressed in Loveland, Colorado.
