Writing for Publication: A Practical Guide for Educators.
Jalongo, Mary Renck
Comprehensive and logically sequenced, this guide seeks to helps educators publish on topics such as classroom experience, conference presentations, or research projects. Included in the guide are practical strategies, concrete examples, recommended resources, and advice from experts. The guide focuses on writing and how it is approached and accomplished, despite all of the struggles and time constraints. Secondly, it is limited to nonfiction for professional audiences--those works that are true rather than fabricated, grounded in theory and research, and rooted in the lives of practitioners. And third, the guide takes the stance that writing is a craft, a set of skills that can be improved with practice, rather than the "fortuitous visitation of the Muse to some tortured artist's soul." Chapters in the book are: (1) Refuting Persistent Myths about Writing for Publication; (2) Imagining Yourself in the Author's Role; (3) Internalizing the Characteristics of Publishable Writing; (4) Mastering the Strategies Used by Successful Authors; (5) Publishing Articles in Your Field; (6) Writing Books for Fellow Professionals; and (7) Learning to Work with Editors and Reviewers. Appended are: Words Used to Describe Effective Writing; Publish or Perish: Some Challenges to the Concept; "Taking Care of Yourself as a Writer" (Patricia Crawford); Basic Principles of Nonsexist Language; Writing the Nonfiction Article: An Instance of Problem Solving; "From First Draft to Article Draft" (Charlotte Krall); The Nonfiction Book Process; What Do Editors Want? What Do They Routinely Reject?; and Common Questions about Writing. Individual chapters contain references. (NKA)
