Semper fi: The Effect of Marriage Enrichment on Military Marriages: A Causal Study
Thompson, Mark F.
ProQuest LLC, Ed.D. Dissertation, Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary
A study of healthy marriages was conducted and five keys were found to exist in all of them: spirituality, intimacy, conflict resolution, communication and financial management. The author examined secular and spiritual literature and found these keys were prevalent in both. Military couples experience many stressors that are not found in non-military marriages. Among these are frequent deployments, younger overall age, PTSD, being away from home and familiar support systems. The author was curious to learn if teaching marriage enrichment classes in a local church can aid in producing healthy marriages in military couples. Bruce Wilkinson's "A Biblical Portrait of Marriage," a twelve-week video based course was given to 76 married Christians who are members of local Southern Baptist Churches. These individuals filled out a demographic survey, 12 pretests and evaluations and an end-of-course posttest. The results of these are delineated in Chapter 4. The findings of the study indicate a very strong correlation between strengthening military marriages and the exposure of couples to biblical teaching on the five characteristics found in all healthy marriages. The results of questions pertaining to the problem and the five sub-problems point affirmed the link between biblical teaching on marriage and the strengthening of marriages. The author, a pastor at a local Southern Baptist church, also noticed a marked increase in counseling directly related to the lessons being conducted. Many couples have expressed their appreciation for the material they have learned and desire to learn more. As a result of this project, more extensive training will be conducted with these couples to aid them in further improving their marriages.
