Styles of Child Discipline: A Survey of Attitudes and Behavior.
Charlop, Marjorie H.; Sheehy, Nancy
Three hundred residents of the Pomona Valley area, near Los Angeles, were surveyed about their attitudes towards child discipline techniques. The residents were also asked to report on the punishment methods they practice with their children. Results from 102 returned questionnaires indicated that most people were moderate in their attitudes toward various child punishment methods, agreeing more with the less severe forms of punishment (scolding and sending children to their rooms) and disagreeing more with the more severe types of punishment (spanking and beating). Negative correlations between people's attitudes toward punishment and reported punishment behavior was found, suggesting that what people believe regarding punishment and what they do are two different issues.
