The vast majority of complex engineering tasks in today's business world are completed using a team-oriented approach. Therefore, teaching collaborative skills to university students can be viewed as a practical means of enhancing their employability. With these goals in mind, the authors developed a network environment that helps Taiwanese science and engineering undergraduates to learn through collaborative design. The system, which they call the Cooperative Remote Access Learning-View System (CORAL-View), consists of design interfaces, courseware, a team partner recommendation process, and learning activities. CORAL-View's three primary components are an environment for knowledge construction, a learning resource database, and a learner database. This paper describes a formal evaluation of the system's effectiveness as a Web-based approach to learning; of particular interest was the feasibility of the team recommendation procedures that were built into CORAL-View.
