New Jersey State Dept. of Education, Trenton. Div. of Vocational Education.
Intended to help reduce the number of school eye injuries in New Jersey, this document begins with a brief review of existing legislation regarding eye protection in educational institutions and a list of elements essential in an eye safety program. Second, eye protection equipment is examined in terms of: the advantages of safety spectacles over street eyegear; personal eyewear; contact lenses; photochromatic lenses; the use of cover goggles; maintenance and disinfection of eye protective devices; and the posting of eye hazard areas. A selection chart for eye and face protectors for use in industry, schools, and colleges is followed by a chart listing operations and activities commonly conducted in vocational education, science, and fine art instructional settings; their eye hazards; and methods of protection. Appended is information regarding State law and State Board of Education rules and regulations on the use of eye protection devices; the selection of shade number for welding filters; the American National Standards Incorporated; establishing a "Wise Owl Chapter" (application included); first aid for eye injuries; guidelines for contact lenses use in industry; eye health and safety resources; and additional contacts.
