An Energy Management Programme for Grande Prairie Public School District. Energy Conservation: Energy Management.
Calgary Univ. (Alberta).; Alberta Dept. of Education, Edmonton. Planning and Research Branch.
This report describes a pilot energy conservation project in Grande Prairie (Alberta) School District No. 2357. Extensive data collection and analysis were undertaken to provide a sound, quantitative basis for evaluation of the program. Energy conserving measures requiring capital outlays were not considered. During the project, electric demand was reduced by 14 percent and electricity consumption by 25 percent. A 5 percent reduction in natural gas utilization was achieved through more efficient operation of plant by custodial staff and by improved maintenance. The procedures followed are described in detail. Recommendations to other school systems setting up an energy management program are that (1) specialized expertise is required; (2) the support and cooperation of all school personnel (including senior district administrators and custodial and maintenance staff) is necessary; and (3) an energy use monitoring program based on daily energy meter readings is necessary both to control performance and to stimulate awareness.
