Leadership in Mobile Technology: An Opportunity for Family and Consumer Sciences Teacher Educators
Godfrey, Roxie V.; Duke, Sandra E.
Journal of Family and Consumer Sciences, v106 n3 p36-40 2014
A stroll across campus reveals that students are plugged into mobile technology. They never have to break stride in their social connectivity as they pursue an education.Where does the family and consumer sciences (FCS) teacher educator fit into this opportunistic scenario? From its inception, FCS has been at the forefront in the application of science to real world problems (Gentzler, 2012).Today, FCS teacher educators must be leaders in the use of mobile technology in preparing tomorrow's teachers to facilitate learning in the 21st century. Traxler (2009) pointed out that today's student "demands to have at least some control over their [sic] learning" (p. 10). To address this demand, education has been moving to a learner-centered pedagogy (An & Reigeluth, 2011) over the last decade. Mobile technology is facilitating that move (Cavus, 2011; Naismith, Lonsdale,Vavoula, & Sharples, 2004).
