Elementary Level Consumer Education. Consumer Education Materials Project.
Baecher, Charlotte; And Others
In this publication, one of a series of six for the Consumer Education Materials (CEMP), form and focus are given to skills emphasized at the elementary school level which parallel consumer competencies. The case studies are organized in two sections. The first section, case studies of interdisciplinary programs, examines a variety of approaches that bring consumer education into virtually all subject areas. These activities include a system-wide program, two consumer law programs, and consumer social studies and consumer science programs. The second section, case studies of teaching techniques, illustrates how such items as advertisements, food labels, grocery prices, and consumer news stories are being used to reinforce basic skills, and how such activities as product evaluation, comparative shopping, and classroom stores can introduce consumer concepts. A separate chapter discusses factors influencing consumer behavior and attitudes, and suggests strategies for potential value conflicts. (Author/KSM)
