Family Studies I represents the first part of a consumer and homemaking program focusing on individual and family development, parenting, and the daily tasks of living in a family setting. The course is designed to help students study the family as it exists in day-to-day living and to aid them in understanding themselves in relation to their present and future family life. The first section of this publication presents the course description, objectives and goals, the content analysis, and a suggested time sequence. The content analysis focuses on the following broad concepts: self-understanding, values, decision making and problem solving, life styles, families, developmental tasks of adolescence and early adulthood, dating and mate selection, marriage, parenting, marriage dissolution, family life cycle (middle years and later maturity), and career opportunities. The remainder, and majority, of the materials are devoted to course objectives, selected supporting objectives, and content generalizations. The objectives are keyed as to emphasis: human potential, consumer, career education, and/or cultural awareness. The first objective, for instance, is to identify one's own developmental stage (human potential emphasis), and the content generalization is that individuals are unique in their potentialities, maturation, and developmental rates.
