Secondary School Advanced Mathematics, Chapter 6, The Complex Number System, Chapter 7, Equations of the First and Second Degree in Two Variables. Student's Text.
Stanford Univ., CA. School Mathematics Study Group.
This text is the fourth of five in the Secondary School Advanced Mathematics (SSAM) series which was designed to meet the needs of students who have completed the Secondary School Mathematics (SSM) program, and wish to continue their study of mathematics. This text begins with a brief discussion of quadratic equations which motivates the introduction of the system of complex numbers as an extension of the reals. Operations (including conjugation and absolute value) are defined, and the solution of polynomials over the field of complex numbers is discussed. The second chapter of this text deals with analytic geometry and the graphing of linear and quadratic equations in two variables. The relationships between equations and lines, as well as parabolas, ellipses, and hyperbolas in standard position (vertical and horizontal axes), are explored. Many exercises are provided. (SD)
