Nosotras viviremos. Los consejos: A Capacity Building Training Manual for Working with Latina Farmworking Mothers and Mentors of Girls.
Bolomey, Antonieta; Munoz-Lopez, Rosie; Ramirez-Garnica, Gabriela; Ramos, Flavia S.
This project builds organizational and staff capacity to deliver HIV/AIDS education to farmworking Hispanic female adolescents and women. It includes two training manuals, one addressing the issues of farmworking mothers/mentors, and one addressing the issues of preadolescent and adolescent farmworking girls. This manual for mothers contains information on puberty and human developmental stages. The curriculum stresses the importance of clear communication styles and skills building. Each manual contains six units with basic HIV/AIDS and sexually transmitted disease (STD) information, exercises, stories, and handouts. Participants go through a subtle process that involves exploring self-identity without assaulting personal experiences or values and using self-reflection to move toward an understanding of the need to address the reality of sexuality, HIV, and STDs in their lives. Mothers develop and practice skills to help their daughters adopt and sustain healthy, safe sexual decisions. The six units are: (1) "Team Building: Getting To Know Each Other and the Program"; (2) "Our Bodies"; (3) "La Comunicacion: Strategies for Effective Communication"; (4) "Raising Consciousness About HIV/AIDS Among Farmworking Women"; (5) "Understanding the Facts About HIV and Other STDs"; and (6) "Los Consejos: How To Talk to Young Women about Sexuality." (Contains 11 references.) (SM)
