My Son Fired Me!
Borntrager, Randy
Exceptional Parent, v35 n9 p75-77 Sep 2005
In this article, the author describes the positive outcomes experienced by a father and his son with cerebral palsy after participating in Unified Sports, a program that places approximately equal numbers of Special Olympics athletes and athletes without intellectual disabilities ("partners") on sports teams for training and competition. The goal of Unified Sports was to integrate people with and without intellectual disabilities to promote interaction and improve self-confidence among athletes as well as dissolve misconceptions in the general population about people with special needs. Unified Sports program is a successful program because it brings people with and without intellectual disabilities together in a positive way thus changing their willingness to interact.
