On Solid Ground Workbook: Family Support and Sustainable Community Economic Development.
Martinez, Virginia
Based on the view that strong families create healthy local economies and that family support is key to helping families become self-sufficient, active participants in the marketplace, this workbook is part of a wider effort at Family Support America to apply the principles of family support and the strategies of community economic development to strengthen families and communities nationwide. The activities in this workbook build on the foundation laid by the "On Solid Ground" monograph and provide parents and community leaders, family support program staff, and others with a hands-on way to put change strategies to work locally. Following an introduction, the workbook is organized in two parts. Part 1 details foundation activities based on principles of family support practice, including activities to identify values, build a team, assess program capacity, consult local community economic development organizations, identify community needs and resources, draft possible responses, determine the program's role, and evaluate project feasibility. Chapters in Part 2 can be used to suit an individual community's needs and involve activities related to social capital, asset accumulation, work force development, local economic development, and community development. The workbook's appendix delineates the principles of family support practice. (KB)
