Classroom Activities in Sex Equity for Developmental Guidance. Bulletin No. 9204.
Wisconsin State Dept. of Public Instruction, Madison.
Classroom activities focusing on sex equity issues which help students and educators overcome limiting stereotypes, bias, and even discrimination based on gender are described in this document. The activities are arranged by these educational levels: elementary/primary; elementary/intermediate; middle/junior high; and high school. Within each level, activities are grouped in three categories of competencies: learning; personal/social; and career/vocational. The activities, in turn, are organized according to developmental levels, recognizing that as children mature they pass through specific, identifiable developmental stages. Thus the focus for elementary students is on learning about concepts, for middle and junior high school students it is on understanding concepts, and for high school students it is on applying concepts. Goals are listed in each section with accompanying relevant activities. Activities range from having elementary school students discuss if females or males have the abilities needed to use common objects such as a hammer and an iron; to examining female stereotypes in television commercials for middle and junior high school students; to family life role playing for high school students. Appendices include an additional activities report form, a list of sex equity resources in Wisconsin, and a core bibliography. (ABL)
