Investigations in Mathematics Learning, v2 n2 p1-18 Win 2009-2010
This paper gives results of a study on a Personal Response System (PRS). Three sections of college algebra are compared; one section used PRS and PowerPoint, one used PowerPoint, and one was considered a control. Students were given a pretest and posttest with a retired version of a mathematics ACT test, and all students gained an average of one point, with no differences found between sections. Students in the non-PRS sections outperformed students in the PRS section on several course components. Survey results from the PRS section were mixed and have been used to modify PRS use. These modifications are given, along with more recent survey results that indicate that students are more engaged with PRS.
