This document contains six papers exploring the training and learning of older people in Australia's vocational education and training (VET), and of technical and further education (TAFE) programs in the adult and community sectors. "Preface" (Andrew Smith) discusses the adequacy of training opportunities available to older Australians in view of the country's rapidly aging population which, combined with a lower birth rate, is rapidly changing the labor market situation. The following are among the issues considered in "The Need for Training and Learning" (Josie Misko): demographic changes; age, health, and economic productivity; the cognitive and physical effects of aging; age stereotypes and ways of overcoming them; and the imperatives of lifelong learning. "Older People in VET" (Jane Schueler) examines older Australians' participation in VET and TAFE, sowing that although older people are generally satisfied with VET, without employer support during their studies and without career guidance and resources provided for them, training outcomes for older students will not be improved. Labor market and training issues for older workers in different industries and occupations are considered in "Training and Labour Market Issues" (Katrina Ball). "Case Studies" (Kate Barnett) reports what 12 older Australians revealed about the role of formal training in mature workers' lives, the levels of mobility and self-employment among mature workers, and factors affecting participation in training, illustrating factors which encourage and inhibit training participation. In summary, Andrew Smith concludes that older people are adapting to the changes in society and the workplace by taking up opportunities for training and learning in ever greater numbers, and doing so in a tactical manner that will enhance their adaptability and flexibility.
