Building Coalitions for Support of Schools.
Hart, Thomas E.
OSSC Bulletin, v32 n1 Sep 1988
Public education today involves various citizen groups, state agencies, service organizations, interest groups, institutions of higher education, and other constituencies who influence policies and assist districts with finances, materials, and personnel. This bulletin discusses strategies for organizing these groups into a coalition that coordinates their various activities. The first section defines coalitions, describes their types, and presents a rationale for establishing a coalition of outside groups to support a school district. The second section discusses steps to take in the formation of coalitions: identifying the need, initiating the coalition, and setting up a governing board. The third section provides suggestions for the effective operation of coalitions, including strategies for dealing with conflict and for clear communication between district and coalition. The final section provides the following examples of coalitions in action: (1) Adopt-a-School Program; (2) Career Awareness through Mentors; (3) Outreach to Senior Citizens; (4) Small Grants Programs; (5) Fund-Raising for the Coalition; (6) Public Awareness Campaign; and (7) Miscellaneous Projects. Appended are the addresses of organizations cited in the bulletin, references, and a list of persons interviewed. (TE)
