Language Learners in Study Abroad Contexts. Second Language Acquisition
DuFon, Margaret A., Ed.; Churchill, Eton, Ed.
Multilingual Matters
Examining the overseas experience of language learners in diverse contexts through a variety of theoretical and methodological approaches, studies in this volume look at the acquisition of language use, socialization processes, learner motivation, identity and learning strategies. In this way, the volume offers a privileged window into learner experiences abroad while addressing current concerns central to second language acquisition. This book includes studies on learners in a variety of contexts that investigate the study abroad experience through diverse theoretical frameworks and would be useful for graduate students and advanced researchers investigating second language acquisition and socialisation as well as educators involved in study abroad programs. Following a preface and transcription conventions, this book is divided into 10 chapters and four parts. The first chapter presented is: Evolving Threads in Study Abroad Research (E. Churchill and M. A. DuFon). Part 1 includes the next chapters in the book: (2) Learning to Take Leave in Social Conversations: A Diary Study (T. Hashall); and (3) Learning to say "You" in German: The Acquisition of Sociolinguistic Competence in a Study Abroad Context (A. Barron). Part 2, contains chapters: (4) The Socialization of Taste during Study Abroad in Indonesia (M. A. DuFon); (5) Joint Construction of Folk Beliefs by JFL Learners and Japanese Host Families (H. M. Cook); and (6) Norms of Interaction in a Japanese Homestay Setting: Toward Two-Way Flow of Linguistic and Cultural Resources (M. Iino). Part 3 of the book presents chapters: (7) Negotiation in a Japanese Study Abroad Setting (A. McMeekin); and (8) Variability in the Study Abroad Classroom and Learner Competence (E. Churchill). Finally, Part 4 contains the two concluding chapters: (9) Study Abroad Social Networks, Motivation and Attitudes: Implications for Second Language Acquisition (C. L. Isabelli-Garcia); and (10) Language Learning Strategies in the study Abroad Program (R. Adams). Appended are: (1) Pre-Program Questionnaires; and (2) Post-Program Questionnaires. A list of references and an index complete the book.
