Posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is an important possible outcome of exposure to traumatic events that occur in childhood. However, early traumatic experiences are also an important risk factor for several other mental disorders, such as borderline personality disorder and major depressive disorder. Furthermore, chronic stress, including daily hassles, is known to contribute to the exacerbation and maintenance of these disorders. While most studies that investigate the impact of stress and trauma on psychopathology focus on only one aspect of stress, the aim of this study was to analyze simultaneously whether childhood trauma, trauma in adulthood and current daily hassles are differentially associated with aspects of psychopathology such as depression, borderline symptoms, PTSD and dissociation. Early trauma, especially sexual abuse, was associated with most measured dimensions of psychopathology, whereas traumatic sexual experiences after puberty were associated with depression and PTSD symptoms. Perceived stress (daily hassles) in the previous year was strongly associated with current psychopathology, i.e. dissociation, depressive symptoms, PTSD and borderline symptoms, even when statistically controlling for traumatic experiences. These results document that retrospective reports of past year minor stressors are associated with psychopathology even after statistically controlling for associations between psychopathology and traumatic experiences.
