Noting that childhood obesity is a growing concern for parents, educators, and health care providers, this guide and videotape, "Being Active at Child Care," is from a three-part series, "Active Me, Healthy Me," exploring ways to keep children active while in child care settings. The 13-minute videotape demonstrates in both a child care center and a family child care home how a safe and activity-friendly environment can be arranged. Creative, safe, and age-appropriate activities for infants, toddlers, and preschoolers are demonstrated with an emphasis on helping children make physical activity part of a healthy lifestyle. Mealtimes in child care during which children are exposed to wholesome foods and a creative eating environment are also shown to exemplify the importance of good nutrition and role modeling in the development of healthy eating habits. The guide introduces the problem of childhood obesity and overweight, includes a narrative for the video, and provides student/audience objectives, a pretest and posttest, discussion questions, and viewer handouts. Handouts for viewers include kitchen safety guidelines, snacks children can help prepare, physical activities for children of various ages, ideas for making family-style dining successful, and resources to reinforce the benefits of physical activity, proper nutrition, and family-style dining.
