College Student Video Gaming and Parental Influence
Chue, Maechi
ProQuest LLC, Ph.D. Dissertation, Oakland University
Video gaming is prevalent among college students, and researchers have documented negative consequences from some students' excessive video gaming, but the study of past and current parental influence on college student video gaming is limited. This study collected data from college students from several Midwestern U.S. universities using an online survey. The researcher examined relationships between college students' self-reported video game engagement and their ratings on several parenting factors: perceived parental reciprocity, parental attitude toward video gaming, parental monitoring of video gaming during high school, parent-student communication frequency, and parental awareness of current video gaming. Parental discrepancies and gender interactions between parents and students were analyzed. Parental reciprocity was significantly associated with college students' scores on a video game engagement scale. Further analysis showed that this relationship was found only among male students and students who reported that their parents were moderately or highly aware of their video gaming. Discrepant parental attitudes regarding video gaming were also related to male respondents' high scores on video game engagement.
