Responsive Reading: Caring for Chicken Little
Maderazo, Catherine
Young Children, v64 n3 p86-90 May 2009
Media images and news about current events have the potential to strike like acorns. In these moments, children, like Chicken Little, need caring adults who can help them understand what is happening. As early childhood educators, one must recognize and provide opportunities to guide children's social and emotional well-being in addition to supporting their academic development. One needs to listen and understand what children are trying to tell them about how they see and feel about the world. Teachers can engage in responsive reading by selecting stories that bridge past and present experiences and are worthy of personal connections and conversation.
