Experimental instructional projects and educational programs generated by teachers at the Big Ten universities and the University of Chicago are described. Department-based projects include the following: introductory botany for nonscience students, University of Illinois, Urbana; futuristic and technological approaches to nonmajor biology, Ohio State University; communications--an integral component of the learning process, University of Wisconsin, Madison; chemistry resource room and help laboratory, Purdue University; the Indiana model for the science preparation of the elementary education major, Indiana University, Bloomington; evaluation of a year-long sequence of English courses emphasizing scientific writing, Michigan State University; writing to learn--faculty workshops on undergraduate writing, University of Minnesota; Center for Instructional Development in Engineering, Purdue University; and inservice education for improved student writing--the Wisconsin writing project, University of Wisconsin, Madison. Institutional support projects are as follows: a holistic approach to special academic services, Purdue University; the Indiana University Learning Skills Center--extending resources through linkages; Iowa regents universities Bachelor of Liberal Studies Degree; a program to improve the teaching of graduate assistants and other faculty, University of Illinois, Urbana; the integrated science program, Northwestern University; the rise and fall of course mart, University of Michigan; and diagnosis of instructional outcomes, University of Minnesota.
