Accessible Theatre Arts Programs
Texas Education Agency, Austin. Div. of Curriculum Development.
Intended to help administrators and theatre teachers provide a theatre arts program accessible to disabled actors, technicians, and audiences, the guide focuses on ways to alleviate limitations in the theatre. The following topics are addressed (sample subtopics in parentheses): awareness (use of improvisations and simulations); acclimatization (theatre orientation, creative drama, and theatre games); selection of performance materials (suitability of scripts); auditions (considerations for casting individuals with a variety of disabilities); rehearsals (considerations for individuals with orthopedic, auditory, and visual impairments and learning disabilities); design (considerations for orthopedically, auditorially, and visually handicapped persons); technical crews; and accessible performances (general considerations for audience members). Resource information on definitions, causes, effects on living, misconceptions, and suggestions for relating to people with orthopedic, auditory, and visual impairments are offered. The guide concludes with a list of accessible theatres, plays with disabled characters, and an annotated bibliography. (CL)
