The Merits of Giving an Extra Credit Quiz
Carroll, Ryall
College Teaching, v62 n4 p151-152 2014
In the past, Ryall Carroll struggled to get students to arrive on time, read the material in advance of the class, and to start class on topic. In an attempt to address these issues, he started implementing an extra-credit two-question quiz at the beginning of every class, hoping it would provide a small incentive for students to at least come on time and do the assigned reading. The quizzes contained a couple of fill-in-the-blank, multiple-choice, or true/false questions based on the assigned reading. The quiz started promptly at the beginning of class and lasted for three minutes. If a student showed up late, they missed their chance to take the quiz. All quizzes were extra credit and were intended only to add positively to students' grades as all correct answers earned points toward their upcoming unit test. Ultimately, he found that extra credit quizzes administered at the start of every class helped significantly to facilitate a better classroom environment, foster good study habits, create continuous reinforcement, yield a deeper understanding of the material, improve student engagement, and solve some logistical issues, like lateness.
