Should Standard Calculators Be Provided in Testing Situations? An Investigation of Performance and Preference Differences.
Hanson, Kaaren; Brown, Bonny; Levine, Roger; Garcia, Teresa
Applied Measurement in Education, v14 n1 p59-72 2001
Studied the effects of calculator type (own calculator versus standard calculator) on student performance and the differential impacts of calculator type for children from a variety of backgrounds. Results for 50 eighth graders show no performance advantages associated with calculator type related to student background, but calculator preferences depended on the complexity of the student's own calculator relative to the standard one.
