Most board members are aware of their fiduciary duty to oversee proper risk management of their institutions. Most boards are kept abreast of the various federal laws and the necessary insurance coverage, internal audits, and accreditation reviews that make modern-day governing boards increasingly more accountable. Given this combination of pressures, many governing boards may assume disaster recovery plans are tested and documentation updated on a regular basis. However, the survey of campus chief business officers reported in this article shows that the actual state of preparedness may be less than reassuring. While almost all respondents were confident that they would be able to recover from a disaster, disaster recovery issues were not a clear priority at most institutions. The author makes several concrete recommendations for administrators who wish to improve disaster recovery planning at their institutions.
