Using Analogies as an Experiential Learning Technique in Multicultural Education
Suthakaran, V.; Filsinger, Keri; White, Brittany
Multicultural Perspectives, v15 n2 p92-97 2013
In this article the authors specifically address the use of narratives in the form of analogies as an experiential learning activity. The use of analogies as an experiential learning tool in multicultural education can be helpful in a number of ways. Analogies provide an alternative tool for processing multicultural topics with students who have had limited exposure to racial minorities. By mapping or generalizing the relational predicate (sameness) between the students' subjective experience and the experiences of the characters in the analogies, it makes it possible for White students to empathize with the experiences of racial minorities. Furthermore, the use of analogies can provide a safe strategy to process multicultural topics that can be intimidating or anxiety-provoking to White students. At the time the article was written, the authors did not find any literature that specifically addressed the use of analogies as an experiential learning technique for multicultural education. Here they offer background information on experiential learning and the use of analogies in education, and illustrate the use of analogies as an experiential learning technique in multicultural education.
