ZHE: [Noun] Undefined--An Interview with Performers Antonia Kemi Coker and Tonderai Munyevu
Shaskan, Victoria
Research in Drama Education, v18 n2 p209-212 2013
In February 2012, London-based theatre company Collective Artistes previewed "ZHE: [noun] Undefined," a new play created by director Chuck Mike and performers Tonderai Munyevu and Antonia Kemi Coker. The play follows the true life stories of the two performers, both British Africans, living at the intersections of culture, nationality, gender and sexuality. Born in Zimbabwe, Tonderai identifies as gay and androgynous. In the past few years, he has made the decision to live as a gay male. Born in England to Nigerian parents, Antonia is a lesbian and is often mistaken as male. In the play, their stories of navigating these identities and the process of growing up intertwine to explore how one responds to difference in its many forms. In these extracts from interviews, the performers reflect on the impact creating and performing "ZHE" has had on themselves and their audiences. (Contains 1 figure.)
