eBooks--Ready for School Libraries?
Pappas, Marjorie
School Library Monthly, v26 n2 p48-52 Oct 2009
For those who tend to purchase many books for personal or professional use, the eBook reader would easily pay for itself within a year. The two leading brands of eBook readers today are the Amazon Kindle and the Sony Book Reader. Both are similar in size, weight, and purchase price. The Kindle includes a keyboard while the Reader provides access to a keyboard by using the touch screen. The Reader and the Kindle both have access to large selections of eBooks but access to these books is provided through a different process. Another eBook reader that is new on the scene is the Cool-er created by Neil Jones. The e-book industry is still in its early stages and very fluid. This is not the time to go out and buy 50 eBook readers because the eBook formats are changing too rapidly. What should school librarians do? They can invest in a few eBooks, watch, and learn. (Contains 2 tables, 6 online resources, and 5 resources.)
