Education in Bosnia: Religion, Language and Control.
McCreight, Richard Douglas
This book investigates the forces shaping the development of education systems in Bosnia and the impact those historical forces may, or may not, have on the condition of secondary education in Bosnia today. Initial chapters offer historical background about educational development in the Balkans and in Bosnia. The volume outlines the accumulative effect of the previous centuries through a survey of the faculty and students in Sarajevo city secondary schools. The survey is driven by hypotheses with origins embedded in the historical evidence. It concludes with thoughts and recommendations about the future development of education in Bosnia and its sister nations in Europe. This publication examines the development of education in Bosnia as a system. It focuses on the impact of language, religion, and control mechanisms on the education process of the region. The historical forces shaping Bosnian education are described with particular attention devoted to the Austro-Hungarian and Communist periods. The development of the military systems of the country is told in detail. The book provides information to help understand the other countries of the Balkans: Croatia, Rumania, Serbia, and Bulgaria. (Contains 251 endnotes and a reference list of 43 books and 86 journals/periodicals/reports). (BT)
