Rocks Are Boring--Aren't They?

The new English Curriculum requiring not only the study of sedimentary and igneous rocks but also understanding of fossil formation, is a great opportunity to make this one of the most exciting units any science teacher can present. When an animal or plant dies, it "disappears" completely as it is degraded by a range of organisms. It may be eaten by other animals or broken down by micro-organisms releasing enzymes into it and absorbing its nutrients. Sometimes however, organisms do not decay completely and this is when a fossil forms. Tara Lievesley shares a few thoughts and websites to support the teaching of rocks and fossils.
