Handbook for Increasing Ethnic Minority Participation in APA Divisions, State Psychological Associations, and Council of Representatives.
American Psychological Association, Washington, DC. Board of Ethnic Minority Affairs.
This handbook describes ways to increase representation of ethnic minorities on the American Psychological Association (APA) Council of Representatives and in APA affairs generally. Increased minority representation in APA affairs should promote research on special populations and demonstrate the APA's refusal to accept the status quo. Methods for divisions and state associations to identify, attract, and recruit minority members show the APA's commitment to cultural diversity. Communication with minority members to provide support through newsletters, convention meetings, a mentor system, and networking display willingness to diversify membership and influence leadership. The most visible and formal presence of minority constituents would be election to the executive committee of the board of directors or council. Appendices include addresses of minority psychological associations and of members of the Board of Ethnic Minority Affairs, as well as a survey on mentorship. (DHP)
