A Comparison of Biological and Adoptive Mothers and Fathers: The Relevance of Biological Kinship and Gendered Constructs of Parenthood.
Miall, Charlene E.; March, Karen
Adoption Quarterly, v6 n4 p7-39 2003
Used qualitative interviews to examine beliefs and values about biological and adoptive parents. Considered how biological kinship, gender, and actual parenting behavior affect the assessments respondents made of the emotional bonding between parents and children. Found that biological and adoptive parents viewed motherhood as instinctive and fatherhood as learned. Explored the implications of the social context and gendered constructs for family practitioners working in adoption. (KB)
