Biography and Young Gifted Learners: Connecting to Commercially Available Curriculum
Robinson, Ann; Cotabish, Alicia
Understanding Our Gifted, v17 n2 p3-6 Win 2005
Biographies are an important resource for extending and differentiating the curriculum for high-ability learners. To include biography in curriculum, educators need answers to the following four questions: (1) How are commercially available biographies located?; (2) What criteria are useful in selecting biographies for high-ability learners?; (3) What existing curriculum materials for high-ability learners lend themselves to biography study?; and (4) What are some examples of biography activities educators can use? Using children's biography as an extension of commercially available curriculum units is an effective and creative means of personalizing experiences for the high-ability learner. The "Blueprints for Biography"--a template for biography study which can be customized to specific children's biographies--provides directed questioning, writing opportunities, primary source activities, and an avenue for investigating talent development. Biography responds to the affective and cognitive needs of bright readers. Because "Blueprints" connect easily to high quality commercially available curriculum, they meet the needs of busy teachers as well.
