How Leaders Can Make a Big Difference

Time and collaborative learning experiences are key to successful implementation of literacy standards. Leadership is just as important. What do system and school leaders do that teachers value most and identify as most helpful in their efforts to ensure high-quality literacy and standards-based instruction for all students? According survey results and confirmed by research, system and school leaders this article discusses the following things that system and school leaders can do: (1) Establish a vision for high-quality instruction; (2) Share leadership on key issues impacting instruction; (3) Tap the expertise of their best instructors; (4) Make collaborative time a priority and remove the barriers to do it; and (5) Behave as the chief learner and model all the practices they ask of colleagues and staff. These actions are small but very important things that system and school leaders do and teachers value most.
