SNAC: San Mateo Nutrition Activity Curriculum. "Swing Into Nutrition" (Kindergarten - Fifth Grade).
San Mateo City Elementary School District, CA.
The primary goal of the San Mateo Nutrition Activity Curriculum (SNAC) is to assist the development and improvement of healthful food habits among kindergarten through fifth grade students. The curriculum is based on five concepts: food choices and health; factors influencing food choices; food related careers; consumer competencies; and food safety and sanitation. The curriculum is multidisciplinary. Cognitive and affective objectives in language arts, science, health, social studies, and math are integrated with nutrition concepts and synthesized with appropriate instructional methods. Each lesson contains directions which include behavioral and process objectives, a conceptual focus, teacher information, materials needed or suggested, specific directions for motivation and activities, suggestions for evaluating pupil performance, and additional resources and activities. Cooking and food preparation activities are occasionally suggested. Enrichment lessons for reinforcing previous material are provided at the end of each of the six curriculum guides. (Author/RH)
