Go to Your Room! Consequences That Teach.
Steelsmith, Shari
Parents' use of logical consequences to their children's misbehavior can be an effective component of child rearing. Noting parents' need for a resource providing information on effective consequences, this book discusses the importance and use of consequences as a guidance tool for parents to use with children. The book lists common misbehaviors in children ages 3 to 14 years and several learning-oriented consequences for those behaviors, and offers tips on delivering the consequences and following through. Chapter 1 discusses rules and why children break them. Chapter 2 describes different types of consequences, the use of rewards, and consequences to avoid. Chapter 3 concerns the selecting of the right consequence for an individual child. Chapter 4 addresses delivering the consequence and following through. Chapter 5 presents specific logical consequences for common misbehaviors, including arguing with parents, begging at stores, dawdling, cutting classes, neglecting self care, and whining. Chapter 6 provides guidelines for planning for a recurring behavior problem. (Contains 31 references.) (KB)
