Native American Studies in Higher Education: Models for Collaboration between Universities and Indigenous Nations. Contemporary Native American Communities.
Champagne, Duane, Ed.; Stauss, Jay, Ed.
This book compiles stories about the formation of American Indian/Native American studies in 12 mainstream university settings. Common elements of these successful programs include a highly committed core of Indian and non-Indian faculty and students who believe in the intellectual and nation-building agenda of Indian/Native studies; a strong measure of program independence and permanence; and the creation of an integrated community of students, faculty, tribal members, and Elders. "Defining Indian Studies through Stories and Nation Building" (Duane Champagne, Jay Stauss) introduces the book. Chapters are: (1) "Eleazar Wheelock Meets Luther Standing Bear: Native American Studies at Dartmouth College" (Colin G. Calloway); (2) "American Indian Studies at the University of Oklahoma" (Clara Sue Kidwell); (3) "American Indian Studies at the University of California-Los Angeles" (Duane Champagne); (4) "Culture, Tradition, and Evolution: The Department of Native Studies at Trent University" (David Newhouse, Don McCaskill, John Milloy); (5) "American Indian Studies at the University of Arizona" (Jay Stauss, Mary Jo Tippeconnic Fox, Shelly Lowe); (6) "A Hemispheric Approach: Native American Studies at the University of California-Davis" (Jack D. Forbes and others); (7) "In Caleb's Footsteps: The Harvard University Native American Program" (Lorie M. Graham, Peter R. Golia); (8) "A Story of Struggle and Survival: American Indian Studies at the University of Minnesota-Twin Cities" (Patricia C. Albers, Brenda J. Child, Vikki Howard, Dennis Jones, Carol Miller, Frank C. Miller, Jean M. O'Brien); (9) "The Department of Indian Studies at the Saskatchewan Indian Federated College" (Blair Stonechild, William Asikinack, David R. Miller); (10) "O'ezhichigeyaang (This Thing We Do): American Indian Studies at the University of Minnesota-Duluth" (Robert E. Powless); (11) "Standing in the Gap: American Indian Studies at the University of North Carolina-Pembroke" (Stanley Knick, Linda E.
