The Algebra Content Knowledge of Beginning Teachers in California
Caswell, Lisa M.
ProQuest LLC, Ph.D. Dissertation, Capella University
The purpose of this study was to determine the competence of beginning California K-6 teachers in basic algebra topics, and to investigate their level of math anxiety and attitudes toward math. The sample for this study was beginning California elementary teachers in the Bay Area of California. An algebra content assessment and a self-report survey on teacher perceived competence in certain algebra topics were administered. Also administered were the Mathematics Anxiety Rating Scale--Short Version (MARS-S) and the Fennema-Sherman Mathematics Attitudes Scales (FSMAS). Measures of central tendency are reported for the algebra assessment. Math Anxiety Ratings and Attitude Scale scores of participants are reported.
