Making a Big Deal about Everyday Objects
Masse, Don
Arts & Activities, v147 n2 p32-33 Mar 2010
Claes Oldenburg and Coosje van Bruggen, who have been married over 30 years, take items from popular culture and transform them into giant sculptures that are on display all over the world. Their installations include clothespins, baseball bats, garden shovels and ice cream cones, to name a few. This transformation of everyday things is a great connection to the author's fourth-graders' imaginations--the project they create is based on something they use in their 21st-century, everyday lives. This project makes the elements of space, value and perspective entertaining and educational. This project also provides insight into what students are into: iPods, video-game systems, cell phones, sporting equipment and dessert foods are some of the more popular subjects. These items are then drawn in places like parks, cityscapes and backyards. Coupled with the nature of Claes and Coosje's giant sculptures, students are genuinely engaged while learning about several valuable art elements.
