The Development and Evaluation of Physical Science Curriculum Materials Designed to Improve the Attitudes of the Secondary School Slow Learner.

The purpose of this study was to develop and evaluate physical science curriculum materials suitable for secondary school age slow learners. A unit on measuring heat and temperature was developed, using guidelines based on a study of the characteristics of students of below-average intelligence (I.Q. between 75 to 90) and reading ability at or below grade level. This unit was then presented in 33 lessons to an experimental group of 23 students. A comparable group of 26 students was used as a control. Attitude data collected using a semantic differential technique and a teaching rating form supported the hypothesis that the experimental program would result in a significant improvement in attitude towards science class and science laboratory. Changes in attitude to the science teacher, school, and the topic were not significant. (MM)
