This report provides historical data on enrollment, weekly student contact hours, and average daily attendance during 1968-1978 for the Los Angeles Community College District (LACCD). Enrollment was 129,296 in fall 1977, a 2.5% increase over fall 1976 (when enrollments had dropped 7.9%); major contributing factors were more vigorous recruitment efforts, increased retention resulting from special programs, and an increase in high school graduates. However, for the first time, spring enrollments did not follow the fall trend and declined 1.3%; contributing factors included decreases in male (5.2%), full-time (5.6%), and veteran (34.2%) students and in classes offered compared to the previous spring. The marginal 1977-78 changes reflected a continuing stabilization process apparent after several years of growth; LACCD fall enrollments have increased 41.4% since its inception in 1969. In addition, minority student enrollment was more than 60% districtwide in fall 1977, an increase of almost 12% from the previous year. Instructional Television enrolled 1,539 students in fall 1977 and 2,685 in spring 1978. Overseas enrollment was 6,208 at military bases worldwide in fall 1977. Community services non-credit enrollment was up 20% over fall 1976. Other colleges in the county revealed similar enrollment and attendance trends. (Author/TR)
