The opportunity for American Council Fellows to read widely in academic administration is an integral part of the Academic Administration Internship Program. The books listed in this reference guide, while perhaps the most important in their fields, are only suggestive of a wider literature on higher education and administrative science. Some books in the guide, marked with an asterisk, comprise a basic fifty book library that each Fellow should master. The division of the bibliography include: the sociology of organizations, management, management in the profitmaking sector, academic organization and administration, history of higher education and comparative higher education, goals and purposes, impact of college, and special reports.
