Assistive Technology in Teacher-Training Programs: A National and International Perspective
Safhi, Mohammad Y.; Zhou, Li; Smith, Derrick W.; Kelley, Pat
Journal of Visual Impairment & Blindness, v103 n9 p562-568 Sep 2009
The study presented here investigated how assistive technology training is being integrated into teacher preparation programs for teachers of students with visual impairments worldwide. The survey investigated how knowledge of assistive technology is addressed (whether in specific courses or by embedding the content throughout the program), what content areas are discussed, and to what extent specific assistive technologies are addressed throughout the program. The results of the survey demonstrated that assistive technology has become an important facet of international programs that train teachers of students with visual impairments. There was strong agreement on the competencies that were presented; however, it must be stressed that these competencies are generic. It is apparent that each teacher training program is teaching different assistive technologies and at different levels. (Contains 3 tables.)
