Working Corners
Hochtritt, Lisa
Teaching Artist Journal, v5 n3 p191-198 Aug 2007
When people think of a person "working the corners," a G-rated image does not generally come to mind. Yet that is precisely what the author, posing as "June Cleavage," did in New York City one dreary morning: she facilitated a meeting of strangers through the creation of a character and an approachable situation. June, with her wacky outfit and sunny disposition, helped to create an environment that encouraged dialogue and discussion about art and life, and the motivating factors behind peoples' actions. She prompted a coming together of individuals, experiences, ideas, and conversation, all while standing on a street corner. The encounter is what teaching artists do continually; they encourage a meshing of ideas and new possibilities through materials and actions. The idea the author offers through this article is that teaching artistry sometimes happens in the forgotten "corners" and that this area holds rich possibilities for exploration. In the story presented in this article, June and her artistic encounters are working the corners, but in a different way. June showed that working in the corners can be a rich area filled with teaching artistry, chance encounters, and metaphorical possibilities, if one just works for it.
